4130 CASS AVENUE
FACADE RENOVATION
4130 Cass is a creative solution to building-restoration within a historic district. The deteriorated condition of the nearly 100-year old structure and modest construction budget necessitated a creative alternative to full-on historic reconstruction. Meanwhile, owner Adnan Chararra challenged D MET to deliver a contemporary and engaging design. The final design employs a fiber-cement rainscreen to cover and protect the existing masonry building while producing a beguiling building form.
A composition of creases and folds, and a variegated color scheme provides for a sense of movement and curiosity. Contextually, the new façade relates to the depth and texture of the neighboring historic structures. Additionally, an arrangement of two storefront windows and a central recessed entrance reinstates the retail nature of the building. The end result is a compelling and energetic contribution to an emerging creative district.
Interestingly, before the renovation 4130 Cass carried the name of Astro Distributors Inc., the name sake of Astro Coffee, or so we are told.
